Loc Tho Pagoda Orphanage
Where it shelters and cares for over 160 abandoned, orphaned or street children. They range from several months to 9 years of age. It’s an orphanage and charity school, which means they not only have children living there but also offer free schooling and lunch to the poorer children in their area, allowing everyone a chance to study and easing pressure on families. The head nun said she started because she used to see many young children missing school and working to collect rubbish from the nearby tip because families were unable to afford schooling for the kids and it was their only income source. So, from that this pagoda opened a charity school in the hope of teaching children how to treat read and write. The children of the orphanage are taken care of by a group of Buddhist nuns and volunteers. Their goal is to provide the children with a safe and caring environment which lessens their misfortune and gives their lives greater purpose and meaning. Being a private organization, the orphanage is trying to provide its children food, shelter, health and education. The nuns and volunteers at the orphanage have devoted their lives for the wonderful mission – helping the orphans and improving the lives of the local children. The first classroom was made of simple bamboo but thanks to the kind donations of visitors and locals, they have been able to build newer, better classroom. Spending some time with the children here by yourself, you will learn about the Vietnamese educational system, and you can play, sing with the little children and give these children some much need hugs. From little things, big things grow.
